How do I get started on a career working in professional sports?

I love athletics. Probably don't have the skill for playing, but would love to be in management, marketing or something business-related for a pro league in the U.S. or Europe! What should I do now to prep? I am in HS.

Milla’s Answer

Hello Fred,

That’s a great question, and it’s very common to love sports but not necessarily want to be an athlete.

From my experience working with events and international projects, I didn’t find my path right away — I discovered it by trying different roles and understanding what I enjoyed most over time.

The business side of professional sports is very broad. You can work in marketing, operations, logistics, event production, partnerships, or team management.

A good way to start now, while you’re still in high school, is to gain small experiences:

Volunteer at local sports events or school competitions;
Look for internships or support roles in clubs or organizations;
Talk to people working in sports or events;
Follow teams and leagues to understand how the business works.

Also, think about what you enjoy most — working with people, organizing, communication, or strategy.

What helped me the most over my 28 years of experience was going through different areas. I started as an assistant working with budgets and production, then moved into logistics, controlling, and today I work as an artistic director.

Because of that, my advice is to experience as many areas as possible within your field. This helps you understand the full process and become stronger in every detail.

Also, learning other languages is a huge advantage, especially if you want to work in international environments like U.S. or European sports.

Start early, stay curious, and build your path step by step — experience will guide you.

Warm greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
