Kimberly’s Answer

Moving away for college is a big adjustment, and feeling nervous or sad about it is completely normal. The best way to cope is to make the new place feel familiar fast: set up your room, keep a few routines from home, and stay in regular contact with family and friends without being on the phone all day. It also helps to get involved early — clubs, study groups, campus events, or even just talking to classmates — because connection reduces that “I’m alone in this” feeling. Give yourself time; most people do not feel fully settled in the first few weeks. A practical next move is to pick one daily habit that grounds you, like a morning walk, journaling, or calling home at a set time.

Why are you turning love into suffering? If you miss your family or your partner, it only means you have wonderful people in your life. That is something to be joyful about, not miserable! But look at what you are doing to yourself: your body is physically sitting in a college dormitory, but your mind is wandering back home. Living in your memory while your life is happening right here, this divided state is what creates friction and pain. When you are on campus, be 100% on campus. Dive completely into your environment, your studies, and the life right in front of you. When you get on the phone with your family or partner, give them your absolute, undivided presence for those fifteen or twenty minutes. Do not sit in college wishing you were at home, and do not go home wishing you were somewhere else. Wherever your physical body is right now, be entirely there. When you learn to bring total presence to the moment you are in, physical distance completely loses its power to disturb you.

Payton’s Answer

Hi Emmi! I understand being away from your family and friends while you're in college can be tough. I went through the same thing. Remember, college is just a short chapter in your life, so make the most of it! It's normal to feel homesick, but meeting new friends can help. Many people you see around are likely feeling the same way. Enjoy your favorite hobbies and connect with others who are also figuring things out. These friendships could last a lifetime, as mine did. This new phase can bring joy and excitement. It might be challenging, but you can do it!
