How can I best prepare myself for the emotional troubles and very high stress situations and circumstances that I will go through working in the criminal justice field?

I am 38 years old, yes I am getting a late start with my career due to poor decisions and life choices I made. However, that is what guided me in the direction to want to study criminal justice because who better to be able to understand people and situations then someone who has been in them and changed their life around? I am truly inspired by this line of work and I genuinely care and want to help people get through rough times, and sometimes just to have someone to understand and "get" you makes all the difference in helping someone to change their life around because you can see what worked for them.

There are some useful phrases that you may have heard over the course of your life that are important if you embody them and understand a few aspects that are important in life and in your career.
"Leave your pride in the parking lot." - Do not take anything personally at work. Learn to leave emotions outside of your decision making while on the job. Leave your personal life outside of work. Keep both separated.

"Stick to the script." Stay consistent to the rules and expectations of the job. Then you can be the best employee for your coworkers and the public.

Be mindful and understand that other people are going through things that may be stressful. There is no reason to add to that stress. Do not get emotionally involved and learn how to reset your mind when you are given a stressful situation. Learn mindfulness and you will do well.
Good luck, you will do well.
