Homework in high school is usually more than what you had in middle school, but how much exactly depends on the school, the country, the grade level, and the subjects you take.

In most schools, you can expect somewhere between one and three hours of homework on a typical weeknight. Freshman and sophomore years tend to be on the lighter side, often one to two hours, while junior and senior years usually get heavier, especially if you take advanced classes like AP, IB, or honors courses, where it can climb to three or four hours some nights. Students taking multiple advanced classes sometimes report even more during exam weeks or big project deadlines.

The workload also depends on the subjects. Math and science classes often have daily problem sets that take thirty to sixty minutes each. English and history classes lean more on reading and essays, which feel lighter day to day but pile up around due dates. Foreign languages usually involve short but consistent practice. Electives like art, music, or PE generally have little to no homework.

A few things make it feel longer or shorter than it really is. If you do your homework right after school while the lesson is still fresh, it goes much faster than if you wait until late at night. Phones and social media easily double the time it actually takes, so keeping them away while working is the single biggest time saver. Group studying or asking teachers questions early can also cut down hours significantly.

Weekends are usually lighter unless you have a project, essay, or test coming up. Most students find that the real challenge is not the daily homework itself but balancing it with extracurriculars, sports, and social life.

So to answer directly, high school homework is not crushing for most students, but it is consistent and adds up if you procrastinate. Plan on one to two hours a night for regular classes and two to four hours if you take advanced ones, and you will have a realistic picture.
