Steven’s Answer

Playing sports is a great way to make friends, stay fit, and be part of a team. But if sports aren't your thing, that's perfectly okay! Doing activities outside of school is important because it shows you're well-rounded and helps you develop leadership skills. Sports might not be essential for everyone, but it's good to get involved in any activities you enjoy beyond your regular schoolwork.

Sports and extracurricular activities are vey important. They allow you to make new friends, interact with others about a mutual like, and do all the things that Smitha said. Also, colleges like these things as they show a well rounded person, especially if you show leadership.

Andrew’s Answer

Extracurricular activities, like playing soccer or chess, are really valuable in high school. How important they are depends on what you want to get out of them.

Why Get Involved?

College and Career Boost: Colleges and employers like to see that you've stuck with activities, taken on leadership roles, and grown as a person, not just scored well on tests.

Life Skills and Discipline: Balancing practices with schoolwork teaches you how to manage your time, bounce back from setbacks, and set goals.

Teamwork and Social Skills: Working together, whether on a sports field or in a chess match, helps you communicate, understand others, and solve conflicts.

Health Benefits: Playing sports keeps you healthy and reduces stress, while games like chess improve your thinking and focus.

Physical Sports vs. Mind Sports

Physical Sports (like soccer and basketball): These build fitness, help you adapt quickly, and teach teamwork and handling stress.

Mind Sports (like chess and debate): These improve logical thinking, mental endurance, personal responsibility, and recognizing patterns.

Tips for Students

Focus on Depth: It's better to spend a couple of years really getting into one activity than just dabbling in many.

Choose What You Love: Being genuinely interested in an activity leads to better leadership chances and more authentic college essays than doing something just to look good on paper.

Jake’s Answer

Hi Emanuel! I had the privilege of playing team sports from 3rd grade through college; spanning middle school, travel leagues, high school, and collegiate levels. High school sports were especially meaningful because they helped me build a great friend group and taught me how to work effectively with others. The experience instilled valuable life lessons like developing a strong work ethic, improving communication skills, and learning team-building principles. Most importantly, high school sports gave me lifelong friendships. Those connections have been instrumental in my success and will continue to be throughout my life.
