Pediatric nurses play a vital role in healthcare and have many exciting opportunities! You can work in outpatient clinics, helping kids during check-ups and physicals. Many pediatric nurses also work in hospitals, caring for children who are staying there. There are lots of options in both settings. For example, you might work on a heart or brain unit in a children's hospital, or in a kidney clinic for outpatients.

As others have stated, there are many different types of pediatric nurse. One can work in a clinic, often overseeing several medical assistants and helping physicians with complicated patient care. One can work on an inpatient unit, where staffing ratios are different in different states, but often about 4 patients per nurse. In a neonatal or pediatric ICU, one cares for 1 or 2 patients at a time, depending on acuity. Some pediatric nurses become experts in one subspecialty, like endocrinology/diabetes care, or surgical/wound care, or psychiatric care.
Basically, the opportunities are many, as are the rewards.

A big part of their role is also helping parents understand what's happening and how to take care of their child at home. This means their job is very hands-on and emotionally involved.
