JOLAYEMI’s Answer

. Pediatric specialties — hospital/facility
This is where it gets specific. Peds nurses can specialize just like doctors: PICU: Critical care for really sick kids on ventilators NICU: Premature babies, some weighing 1 pound Pediatric oncology: Chemo for kids with cancer Pediatric ER: Broken bones, seizures, car accident injuries Pediatric surgery: Prep kids for surgery, recover them after School nursing: Managing diabetes, epi-pens, meds at school

Congratulations on your interest in pediatrics nursing. According to the Society of Pediatric Nursing, their members represent “…28 specializations” (see link below), which is more than I could have imagined as a nurse.

In addition to hospitals and clinics, we may forget about our school nurses, nurses in behavioral health for children, group homes for children, and camps for children (such as camps specifically for children with disabilities and more camp options).

Additionally, nursing has specialties within pediatrics such as neonatal nurses. You can refer to the two nursing organizations’ websites below for more information including AWHONN and NANN.
Pediatrics / Neonatal nurses can also achieve advance degrees and work for example as nurse practitioners or certified nurse anesthetist in even more settings.

To find more specialties, visit the Johnson & Johnson © website (see link below). Scroll down a little bit at the website. You will see a question “I’m starting without….” Then click “Start Here”
(Johnson & Johnson, 2026). As you answer the questions, based on your interest, the site will provide options of the diverse career options in nursing. Please note, all nursing careers have not been discovered and keep growing. So, if you have a new interest/idea, you may be the one to blaze a new trail for nursing.

All the very best.

James’s Answer

As others have stated, there are many different types of pediatric nurse. One can work in a clinic, often overseeing several medical assistants and helping physicians with complicated patient care. One can work on an inpatient unit, where staffing ratios are different in different states, but often about 4 patients per nurse. In a neonatal or pediatric ICU, one cares for 1 or 2 patients at a time, depending on acuity. Some pediatric nurses become experts in one subspecialty, like endocrinology/diabetes care, or surgical/wound care, or psychiatric care.
Basically, the opportunities are many, as are the rewards.

Sydney’s Answer

Pediatric nurses play a vital role in healthcare and have many exciting opportunities! You can work in outpatient clinics, helping kids during check-ups and physicals. Many pediatric nurses also work in hospitals, caring for children who are staying there. There are lots of options in both settings. For example, you might work on a heart or brain unit in a children's hospital, or in a kidney clinic for outpatients.

Vianne’s Answer

Pediatric nurses do much more than just check-ups. Many people think their job is mostly about giving vaccines and doing routine visits, but they actually provide a wide range of care for kids, from babies to teenagers. They help with everyday issues like colds, infections, asthma, and injuries, and also support children with long-term conditions like diabetes or seizures.

Some pediatric nurses work in hospitals, handling more serious situations like emergency room visits, post-surgery care, or caring for newborns in neonatal units. A big part of their role is also helping parents understand what's happening and how to take care of their child at home. This means their job is very hands-on and emotionally involved.

Michele’s Answer

Great question,
It really depends on where you are working. If you are a pediatric nurse in a hospital setting, they you will be caring for sick children. The type of illnesses will depend on the unit you are on at the hospital. If you are not in the hospital, then you have a lot of options. Some nurses work in school settings, public health departments, private duty, or in a pediatric office. Pediatric nurses would typically give any injections or medications to the kids.

You really have a lot of options when you go into nursing. It is a truly inspiring and noble profession.

Good luck
