WHAT TO CHOOSE ?
Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer from Infosys for a Technical Support role. While I'm happy to have the opportunity, I'm feeling confused about my long-term career path.
Many people have told me that if I start my career in a non-development or non-technical role like Technical Support, it will be difficult to switch to software development or other technical IT roles later.
I have a few questions:
Is Technical Support at Infosys a good role to start my career?
If I work in this role for 1–2 years, will I still be able to switch to a software development or other technical role, either within Infosys or in another company?
If switching to a technical role is difficult, would pursuing an MBA after 1–2 years of work experience be a better option?
From a long-term career perspective, what would you recommend? Should I accept this role, prepare for a technical switch, or plan for an MBA?
I would really appreciate advice from people who have worked at Infosys or have gone through a similar career path.

Yes, it can be a good entry point, especially if it gives you exposure to:
Enterprise applications
Cloud platforms
Databases
Networking
Linux/Windows administration
Automation and scripting
Incident management tools
Client-facing technical problem solving
Before joining, try to understand:
Which technology/project you will support
Whether coding or scripting is involved
Whether internal project movement is possible
Whether Infosys allows role changes after a certain period
Option A: Accept the Infosys role + prepare for technical transition (recommended for many people)
Join Infosys
Learn as much as possible from the project
Build coding skills consistently
Try to move into development/cloud/data roles within 1–2 years
This keeps multiple doors open.
Option B: Reject the role and wait for a pure development job
This can make sense if you already have strong coding skills and realistic chances of getting a developer role soon. But delaying employment without a clear plan also has risks.
Option C: Work 1–2 years and pursue MBA
Choose this if you discover that you enjoy business/management more than coding.
Can you switch to software development after 1–2 years?
Yes, it is possible. Many people have moved from support, testing, infrastructure, or operations roles into development. You will need to build evidence that you can do development work:
Strong programming fundamentals (Java/Python/JavaScript, etc.)
Data structures and algorithms (especially for external companies)
SQL and databases
Git
Software development projects
Understanding of APIs, backend/frontend concepts
Certifications or cloud skills if relevant
A good strategy would be:
Year 0–1:
Perform well in your support role
Learn the technology stack deeply
Spend evenings/weekends building development skills
Create projects and a GitHub portfolio
Around 12–18 months:
Start applying internally or externally for developer/engineering roles
