Hi All! I'm an 8th grader and I need help for volunteer applications. What do I put for any special skills, professional experience, or training that I have?

Service Hours Recs

Thank you comment icon As an 8th grader, you have great traits to list! Organizations look for enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn. Use these ideas:Special Skills: Fast typing, Google Suite proficiency, strong teamwork from group projects, public speaking from class presentations, or being bilingual.Professional Experience: Informal work counts! List babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, student council leadership, or serving as a sports team captain.Training: Red Cross babysitting/CPR courses, laboratory safety rules from science class, or leadership camp certificates.Top Service Hour Recommendations:Local Libraries: Shelving books or prepping children's crafts.Food Banks: Sorting and packing canned goods.Animal Shelters: Making pet blankets or organizing donation drives. Only you can really answer that, Christina. My suggestion is to make a list of **everything** that personally answers those questions. What do you consider your special skills? Do you have any professional experience? What training or education do you have?

And it’s completely okay if you don’t have much in some of those areas yet. There’s a good chance you’re still building that experience. The most important thing is to be honest. Don’t exaggerate or make things up just because you think it sounds better.

If you’re applying for something or hoping to get into a particular position, be upfront about where you may lack experience. Then focus on your **enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and determination to succeed** in the role. Sometimes showing that you’re motivated and eager to grow can be just as important as already having the experience.

Great to see you're applying for volunteer positions! This will be very beneficial in your future when you apply for jobs as well as giving you some wonderful life experiences.

Think about things you have done for others, perhaps informally, such as chores around the house, helping a neighbor, ways you have supported your family or friends, etc. Include skills like communication, flexibility, team player, leader or whatever might describe you. If you have participated in any faith-related or sport activities, include those.

I believe it's not so much about what you've done, but what you're willing to do.

With every good wish and many blessings!

Hi Christina! At your age, no one expects you to have professional work experience yet. A volunteer application is really asking, What can you bring to our organization?

Think beyond paid jobs. Skills you have developed at school, at home, through sports, clubs, hobbies, helping family members, or participating in your community absolutely count.

For special skills, you might include things like being organized, responsible, good with computers, bilingual, comfortable speaking with people, creative, good with children or animals, or good at working as part of a team.

For experience, think about school projects, clubs, sports, student government, helping teachers, tutoring classmates, babysitting, pet sitting, helping at family or community events, fundraising, or previous volunteer activities.

For training, you can list courses or certifications you have actually completed, such as CPR/First Aid, babysitting training, computer courses, leadership programs, or other workshops. If you haven't completed any formal training yet, that's completely okay; don't invent something just to fill the space.

One of the most important things I look for in a young volunteer is attitude. Someone who arrives on time, listens, asks questions, is respectful, helps without constantly being asked, and is willing to learn can be extremely valuable even without experience.

You could write something simple such as: I am responsible, organized, dependable, comfortable working with others, and eager to learn. Through school projects and activities, I have developed teamwork, communication, and time-management skills.

And start keeping a record of everything you do. Your volunteer hours, organizations, responsibilities, projects, awards, and certificates. By the time you apply to college or for your first job, you will already have a history of your involvement and accomplishments.

You don't need an impressive résumé to start volunteering. Volunteering is one of the ways you begin building that résumé. Good luck!

Hey there! It's awesome to see you here. It shows you're curious and ready to take action, which is fantastic! Volunteer groups love people who show initiative, care about others, and want to make a difference. You can start by doing simple things with your friends or family, like babysitting or walking dogs. It's a great way to begin helping others!

It's wonderful to see your enthusiasm for volunteering! Start by listing things you are good at and enjoy doing. Pick your top three and share them with us for more guidance. For example, if you love crafting or building, you could help kids with focus challenges. If biking is your thing, you might assist seniors by running errands for them. There are plenty of ways to make a difference!

Since you’re only in 8th grade, don’t stress about not having professional experience yet! For this section, think about skills you’ve developed through school, sports, clubs, hobbies, or helping out at home or in your community.

Volunteering is one of the ways you’re supposed to start building that experience! Focus on showing that you’re reliable, willing to learn, and genuinely interested in helping.
