Would a physical therapist be a good job for me?

I'm a sophomore in high school. Physical therapy is something I feel like I would enjoy doing. My grandma was a physical therapist and she really enjoyed helping people. That is something I would be interested in but I'm not really sure yet.

Good evening Leyla, I am happy to see you are considering options for your future education while still in high school. I do not know all the paths one could take to help people but I do know the following- Don't keep your options limited based on what you have had exposure to. I am someone that truly believes that when we do something we truly enjoy and has meaning for us we are more successful. Helping people can give us diverse paths. Let's get a little more specific. What about helping people do you like? What does it make you feel? What things were you drawn to as a child? we often demonstrate certain affinity to things, behaviors that can guide us in adulthood. For example, I also love helping people and I'm in finance. I love the investigative part, I like to resolve things, structure and improve efficiency. I also love helping people reach their potential, I love developing people and I feel happy knowing that they are reaching the best version of themselves. I don't get enough in my job so I found a way to help people through volunteering, mentoring, and showing kindness every day.

Yasmin recommends the following next steps:

I want you to think of these questions and come back with your thoughts-maybe we can at least narrow down the path.

Hi Leyla! I think one of the most beautiful ways we learn is from the generations before us. When I look at my own professional life, I can still see many things I learned from my grandmother reflected in who I am today.
The fact that your grandmother was a physical therapist and that her passion for helping people inspires you is already a wonderful starting point.
When you genuinely love what you do, learning and growing in your profession often comes more naturally. Your future patients will also feel your passion, care, and dedication and that can be just as important as your technical knowledge.
You are still young, so explore the profession, learn what the career requires, and if it continues to feel right, follow your heart and pursue something you truly love.

Rebecca’s Answer

It depends on what you enjoy learning about, which classes you like in high school. The PT curriculum is heavy on the biological sciences, and human phyiology, anatomy, and movement. If you like these kinds of classes, and the content excites and interests you, then you are likely choosing the right field. See what you can find at your high school, and talk to other PTs in your community - ask them about their typical day, what they like and dislike about their jobs. Asking to shadow or volunteer at a local hospital, clinic, or nursing facility may help you make the decision.
