How easy is it to go from graduating college to getting a job?

After I graduate college, how do I know what my first job should be? Does it need to be related to the major I study in college or would it be better to take it step by step?

Hi Tyler,

This is a great question! Finding a job after college doesn’t always mean landing a position in your major. Sometimes, you have to prioritize making money and take what’s available and that opportunity can eventually turn into a long-term career.

However, if you want to start building a career in your field, I’d recommend exploring roles related to your internships. Internships allow you to gain hands-on experience, explore different career paths and see if a particular role is something you’d want to pursue long-term.

Getting your first job after college can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. My advice is to start exploring your options before you graduate. Build your résumé, gain experience through internships or part-time jobs, and develop skills that employers are looking for.
Your first job doesn’t necessarily have to be perfectly aligned with your college major. If you find an opportunity related to your degree, that’s a great start. However, don’t be afraid to explore other fields that interest you or help you develop transferable skills.
Think of your first job as a stepping stone, not a lifetime commitment. Focus on learning, gaining experience, building connections, and discovering what you enjoy doing. You don’t need to have your entire career figured out right after graduation. Take it one step at a time, stay open to opportunities, and trust yourself to grow along the way. Your first job doesn’t define your future—it helps you build it.
