To put it in perspective when my dog had an issue with her eye we had to travel 4 hours away to find a dog eye doctor. So if you are a specialist most likely you'll have more business without having to do the things that a general that has to do such as advertising and have a location that has curb appeal and is a convenient location. There are also Specialties within Specialties for example you can be a vet a horse vet or a horse Dental vet. I am a human dentist and diagnosed for abscesses on my horse in her mouth. The general equine vet said that they were abrasions and not abscesses. Anyways fast forward to find out they were abscesses. When you have an each specialty patients come to you or the animals are brought to you from far away even. Another thing to consider is that a lot of General Veterinary practices are being bought up by large corporations and are being run in the same way that medical and dental practices have changed. I've seen it happened to my veterinarian where you go in and you can tell that there is a corporate policy to recommend x y and z and typically it is because that that method is more lucrative.. if the exact same things that has happened in medicine. Also insurance is getting involved in veterinary medicine but less so in the subspecialties of veterinary medicine which gives the specialized that more autonomy. Also the large corporations tend to have lower prices for procedures but they tend to nickel-and-dime and charge for lot of things that are necessary just like medicine and Dentistry. If you specialize you can have the freedom to treat your patients the way you want them treated and not have to explain constantly why the corporate Veterinary Clinic down the streets prices are half of yours.
