What is the typical coursework for a graphic design major or a mechanical engineering major?
These are two fields I am considering for my career choice. I wanted to know a little bit about the course work to help me decide.

Graphic design majors largely focus around the arts, as well as core educational pillars like math, science, english, etc. I went through the Communication Design program at Texas State (amazing professors and course work) and you start covering your bases. Generally speaking, you get to pick "electives" early; color theory, sculpture, metals, textiles, drawing, etc.) On top of these, consider taking 3-4 semesters of art history!
Once you get through the first 2 years, you will most likely start to focus on graphic design as a craft. Learning the tools (Adobe Creative Suite), how to concept and create, and building creative briefs. There are a lot of variables in this field and the direction you want to go in will dictate what type of classes you take. For me, I focused on digital design (UX design, coding) and typography. You can focus on art direction and creative direction, building advertising, conversion center design, UX/UI design, etc.
Hope this was helpful, there are lots of opportunities and diversity in the graphic design field!
