People who pursue their doctorate are extremely passionate about their subject or area they want to pursue. It requires a lot of dedication, patience and composure.

There is not a best way, because it will depend on different factors. But you need to know what is your passion to reach this goal. This will become your expertise area or increase the one that you have. This road could have a lot of competition or could be a novel one. It will depend if you can find something unique that could impact your expertise area or try to replicate something that other published. There's not correct path, so good luck in this journey.
