One piece of advice I would give is to keep an open mind about your employment options. Often we feel pressure as students nearing graduation from HS or College that we need to know exactly what we want to do, and then take steps to be employed in that field. Unfortunately life is not always so simple.

If you have a passion for children, consider looking for positions in daycare or as a nanny, which will provide needed income while building professional experience. Alternatively, if you are interested in attending a college or university to become a teacher, you could decide what area of specialty you would want to study, or if you prefer working with young children, study early education.

If you are interested in music, you might consider pursuing music education which could combine both of your interest areas.

It's wonderful you have so many interests including working with children! Some career opportunities that match your interests may include Teaching or school-related services like Speech Therapy, Music Therapy, or Guidance Counseling. These careers can be very rewarding and often offer great benefits including the flexibility to spend time with friends and family. If any of these options sound interesting to you, your next step could be to meet with your school guidance counselor to see if there are opportunities to shadow any of these professionals within your school district. Best of luck in your career pursuits!

Thank you comment icon Hi Laken, Looking at the things you like to do, I would suggest you to make your carrier in Teaching. This goes with your interest, as you like to be with children and always eager to help people around you. This also gives you an opportunity to be with your friends and family during the free time (after school hours) . Other carrier option is baby sitting. But this would take most of your time and you may/may not get enough time to be with your friends/family. I would suggest you to choose a carrier in teaching field. Thank You Abhishek Bhargava

Dana’s Answer

I think it’s great that you are starting to think about your future career! Since you have a passion for children, the first occupation that comes to mind is a teacher. There is also working in a preschool or after school program. If education is not where you’re thinking, there is also pediatrician, pediatric dentist, or social worker in adoption or the foster care system.

Dana recommends the following next steps:

Get the book “What Color is Your Parachute” to help you determine what fields match your passions. http://www.parachutebook.com/
Try to find a part time job working with children to help you determine if that’s what you really want to do.

You can go for a teaching course according to the subject you like, or even can start teaching younger students in lower class.

Take a few few demo classes, which will give you a feel of how that profession is going to be.
