This is easy for me to answer your question, because I went through this myself before I became a Career Counselor. I thought I would teach but when I went through the actual motions of teaching, I decided this was not for me. So I got a job in a Savings and loan as a New Accounts Counselor and became very interested in the counseling part. Then I had my first child and after he turned 5 I decided to take a course in Career Assessments and Personality Assessments. I found them to be very helpful for me. These assessments put my career interests, and my personality charts together for me and gave me several different career to choose from. As I looked down the list I would star the ones that really interested me. I then made a list of the skills that I had and then looked at my degrees and certifications that I owned, decided to call my last college that I went to to ask about certain programs that I thought I would like and go back to school to get the proper certificates or degrees. I researched this for a while and finally had an interview with one of the professors at the college I graduated from. I brought my Assessments to him since he was a Career Counselor and a Professor at the school. He said he thought I would like this career as a Career Counselor but I had to get another certification, but I was ready to go back if I could figure out how to do this with a child. We figured it out and I went back to school to get my certification , and with that found the career that I really liked. I work in several different schools, offices and state run organizations, and small businesses along with charity groups. I am telling you this because if I had not taken these 2 Assessments I don't think I would have not come to this conclusion on a career by myself. These Assessments are so useful and give you more information about yourself to be able to make choices. I took the SDS (self directed search test, and the Myers Briggs Personality Assessment, but there are other assessments you can take. If you go to a Career Counselor at your school they usually have certain Assessments provided for you. These were the begining of a wonderful Career for many years and I still work part time and still love it. I hope you got some good information and I know if you take the assessments you will be even more educated about your self and what you want, and who you are.
HAPPY RESEARCHING!!

It's tough to make a decision about career - sometimes it can feel like you are making a big commitment by choosing just one! I would recommend that you make an effort to write down your strengths (what are you naturally good at? Think not just of skills, but also your personality), challenges (what do you find takes the most energy and is the least rewarding for you?), and also your interests. From there, make a list of all the potential careers you think are related to that, and look up places around you where there are people doing those jobs. Introduce yourself (either in person, or phone or email, however you can reach out) and ask if you can have a 20minute coffee chat with them for an "informational interview" where you can learn more about their field of work. Come prepared with questions to ask such as:

What skills have helped you be successful? How did you get into this role? What do you find most/least rewarding? What's your advise on what it takes to be successful? What education/training is required? Can you introduce me to anyone else who I could talk to so that I keep learning more?

Always follow up your conversations with a thank you note. From here, take everything you learned from these conversations and make a development plan for yourself to start growing the area that most interests you. By continuing to meet more people, you expand your network and this will bring you more insight and also potential job opportunities.
