Hello Chase,

Congratulations on your career path! Psychology is amazing, after all, human behaviors are the center of everything else. I really like your question and I am giving your a very clear and short answer. There are few methods how you can find internships, in which I am listing below:

  1. Set-up an LinkedIn account and build your virtual network, be careful while choosing your network , they say- "Your network is your net-worth. Start you internship applications and make sure to have a professional CV and write cover letters when is an option...managers want to know what value are you bringing to their company.
  2. Attend events related to psychology and be active when you present yourself there. Check https://www.eventbrite.com/ Here you can filter the event upon your desire, whereas some of them are paid, some are free.
  3. Be courageous; go and meet people in person. After you have selected some options and after you have done some research on the job place, it is a very good idea to be confident and talk to the hiring persons.
  4. If you have a good offer for an unpaid internship do not say no. That internship most probably will create new opportunities.

I hope the above is useful to you, feel free to reply me any additional questions.

Best,

Josana

Hi Chase!

Since you enjoy working with children and families, I would recommend researching non-profits in your area that are geared towards helping children and families.

There are many family shelters or at-risk youth centers that need smart volunteers and interns to help with a multitude of things.

Also, volunteering with suicide hotlines are a great way gateway into helping people through psychology.

Volunteering often leads to paid internships or even jobs at non-profits... and they are GREAT resume builders for people just starting out.

If you apply for an internship vs volunteering, make sure you have a resume ready with the classes you have taken or any child development credits listed, clearly demonstrating how your educational experience is relatable to the internship position.

I hope this helps,
-Lauren
