Sirisha’s Answer

Like every corporation, they'll have product, finance, sales, HR and other functions. Start looking for the various job postings and see what kind of roles they are and what they are looking for. You'll be able to combine the field you like with the company you like. Networking on social media or in person, if possible will also be helpful.

Garrett’s Answer

Hi Cristobal!

I also love cars, and have for as long as I can remember. There are two things that you need to do to set yourself up for a career in the automotive industry. The first to pursue an education that applies to cars, and the second is to get exposure to cars and the car industry.

My love of cars is the reason I went to school in mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers study things like how to engines convert burning fuel into mechanical power, how to control vibrations, and even how to make the driver more comfortable and efficient. If you like science and math classes, you might consider getting an education in one of the many engineering fields that are related to cars: Mechanical, metalugical, chemical, aerospace, and manufacturing engineers (and more) are all necessary!

If engineering is not your thing, there are still many other educational choices that would be very useful at an automobile company, like Sirisha said. These companies need business managers, accountants, HR professionals, lawyers, sales people, etc. Just about any professional career could be applied to the automotive business, so think about the things that you find really interesting and pursue an education in that area.

While you are working on your education, you can do other things to build up your knowledge about cars and the car business. Maybe you could get a summer job at a local car dealership so that you can learn more about the business - even if you are just doing paperwork in the back office at the local Toyota dealer, you will still be learning about how the car business works and moving toward your dream job at Lamborghini.

In the long term, if you really want to target Lamborghini, then it would be good to be sure you have the right language skills. Lamborghini is an Italian company that is now owned by Volkswagen, so most of the design and production work is done in Germany. Do you know German? Italian?

Another thing you can do is find connections with cars through your hobbies. I am an amateur racer, and there are many racing clubs around the country that you could join. They are in constant need of volunteers to help run races. Having some involvement with motorsports (even as a volunteer) would show a potential employer that you are passionate about the car business. Another option would be volunteering at a local car museum - the automobile has a very rich and interesting history, and the more you know the better!

Finally, I have a confession to make. Although I love cars, I don't work in the automotive business. I'm very happy with my career, though. I love science and technology and my career in engineering allows me to work on interesting technical problems with a team of talented people, which I enjoy. And my salary is enough that I can indulge my car passion with an inexpensive race car and working on car projects in my garage. Even if working at Lamborghini isn't where you end up, if you follow your passion, you will be well on your way to an enjoyable life!
