What jobs in tech pay the most money?

I am trying to figure out what I want to do with my future, so I'm wondering what jobs in the technology industry make the most money. Specifically, which jobs are most likely to make me the most money right out of school? And which jobs are most likely to make me the most money overall in my career? Thank you! #technology

Hi. Money should not be your only motivator. Engineering jobs will probably warrant the most moeny right out of college - but then it is up to you to continue to become your best at what you do. Show your value, become an expert, be a strong team player and continue to build your portfolio and brand.

That is the best way to ensure you are securing a profitable future for your self!

This may vary widely based on region. But, some of the top:

Petro Eng
Electrical Eng
Comp Eng
Chem Eng
Comp Sci

Starting salaries will vary by discipline, region, and caliber of company. A top tier company employing a comp sci undergrad on the west coast may pay double what you'd find for an average petro eng job - there's a wide range within each discipline (maybe wider than the difference between disciplines, if that makes any sense).

But, I'd strongly urge you to consider which tech you'd be more interested in, rather than strictly wondering about money.

Excellent question! Start by defining the type of work you are capable of doing and the type of work you enjoy. Hopefully, the two will intersect. Estimated salaries and job descriptions/roles can be researched on a variety of sites. Start your search from these:
- LinkedIn.com
- Dice.com (specifically for tech)
- Glassdoor.com
- Salary.com

As some posters have already suggested. Money should not be the primary motivator. Find something that will interest you first because if it's just money you are after you will eventually burn out of whatever it is you are doing regardless of whatever money you are making. You can find ranges of salaries for various fields on sites like glassdoor.com to give you an idea. But whatever you choose become the best at whatever that field is and do your best to move up that ladder. Also it is wise to understand some about complementary technologies to whatever you decide. This is good because the job market is always changing and you need to be prepared to change with it and not caught off guard. For instance if you like enterprise storage and want to be an engineer it might be beneficial to also have some networking or application experience, basically other technologies that leverage or work with the base technology you would work on.

Once you have a good indepth understanding of the technology and a few years under your belt and in a round about way answering your original question, you could then go the Sales Engineer/Technical Sales/Systems Engineering route where you could then apply that engineering knowledge you have to the sales process. Or you could go straight to sales. Typically account executives "sales guys" make the most money but are the least educated/knowledgeable on what they are selling, they push deals and build relationships. The next in line as far as pay is the Sales Engineer/Technical Sales/Systems Engineering as these are the "technical experts" that keep the sales guys honest but typically get no only salary but commisions and some of the other benefits that the sales guys get. Again this is just one path. There's always the executive path too but if you want to do that look at things like an MBA etc.
