Hi Luis,

Monica's answer is very accurate to answer your initial question. I believe you should also ask yourself if you want to be in the Facility Maintenance profession? I work with very talented Facility Maintenance personnel each day and have found them to be very resourceful, multi-talented and in many cases selfless (always doing what is necessary to keep the building operating no matter the inconvenience to themselves). I have attended many training sessions with them and found that they have a constant thirst for knowledge and love to work with the latest and greatest technologies, while at the same time appreciating the legacy equipment and systems they work on. They are helpful and possess a deep sense of pride for the buildings they are operating and maintaining. I should also mention that I have seen their careers go from maintenance to management. There is a solid future in Facility Maintenance. We are building bigger and more complicated buildings each day. You can specialize in Electrical, Mechanical, Carpentry, Automation Controls and many other related fields. Find out what interests you and see if it is in this field. If it is, you may be like me and look forward to going to work each end every day.

Monica’s Answer

Hi Luis,
The best way to find the answer to this question is to see how many jobs are available in the city/state you plan to work in and what type of facility maintenance you plan to do. For example, if you Google the words "building maintenance jobs in El Paso, TX" you'll see tons of jobs.

The thing is, some of them are general, where they want you to know a little about everything - electrical, painting, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Then there are positions that are specific to elevator maintenance or HVAC repair and maintenance. In addition, some want you to have some type of training, or certification, or specialty license, and experience.

Now, if you're moving to a small town with very little "facilities or buildings" you will have a harder time finding employment and will need to look closer to more populated areas with businesses.
