What is a way that an interior designer could possibly guarantee a more stable income and lifestyle?

I know there could be the possibility to pair it with something else but I am not totally sure I would want to pair it with Architecture so I am looking for other ideas. This is something I might want to major in but I am concerned about the income and not making enough for myself #interiordesign .

I agree with Athena. Staging is a great way to break in to the market and gain stability. I would try approaching custom home builders. I worked for several home builders almost exclusively for almost 20 years because the pay was so good and the work was steady. Got to travel all around the country too. Was a lot of fun!

Hi! Interior Design is a very cool career! I grow up in real estate and when realtors look to stage a house, they hire stagers. This is another possible route you could explore.

The most important thing is to work to gain experience through internships. The best advice I can give is to see about getting internships in the field or places you can volunteer. This will help you see if this is a career path you are interested in and create a network with successful people in the field to gain their advice.

I would recommend doing things like informational interviews with different types of interior designers and asking them questions about the range of compensation in the field, and specifically what types of interior design tend to be better compensated. For example, working in a large design firm might be more stable than doing freelance work. Doing commercial work for hotels or retailers might be different than doing home interiors. There might also be specific types of interior design experience that you can acquire (by selecting a school or program that offers these) that make your skill set more attractive to high end clients and/or design firms.
