Joseph’s Answer

Hi Jesus,

To become a dentist you need to go to college and get a 4 year degree in biology, chemistry, or another applicable science. You'd take your DAT (Dental Admissions Test) and apply to dental schools. Once you graduated and got into a dental school you'd be a student for another 4 years. The first two are academic and the second two are clinical. You'd take your national licensing exam during this time as well as decide on your specialty. You'd match into a dental specialty at a hospital or private practice clinic (depending on what you want to do) and spend another two years or more training. Then you would finally get to practice dentistry on your own!

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Valerie’s Answer

Hi Jesus,
Although I am in medical school, my best friend is in dental school right now. The process is similar, but different. We both went to the same college (Penn State) and majored in biology. This helps get all the prerequisite courses that dental school will need you to have taken before you get there. Then in your junior year of college, you will want to start studying for the DAT (dental admission test). The higher your score is on this test, the better chance you will have to get into a good school. During your senior year of college, you will be applying to dental schools (just like you did for college), except you will now interview at the dental schools. Once you get into a dental school, it is 4 more years of schooling, but this time it is all about dentistry. After 4 years, you can further your specialization (orthodontics, etc) or you can go look for a job as a dentist. Good luck!!

Riley’s Answer

Before you can apply to go to a dental school, you will need to graduate from undergrad school with a bachelor's degree, which will take 4 years. There is no specific major this is required for you to complete, but you should definitely stick with the science field to make sure you are prepared. Majoring in biology or chemistry will set you up well to be taking the proper prerequisites for dental school. When you apply to dental school, you will need to take and pass the Dental Admission Test. Once in dental school, you can either pursue the Doctor of Dental Surgery or the Doctor of Dental Medicine route; both options will tea you 4 years. When you graduate from this school, you will need to take the required exams to become licensed. So after 8 years, you will finally be able to be a dentist.
