Never underestimate the value of volunteerism. Not only are you contributing positively to your community, you’re networking while furthering you’re hands-on experience. If you’re still in school your guidance counselors or advisors will be able to direct you toward reputable affinity groups to get started. Also, most employers have volunteer programs you can join. Another important facet of volunteerism is updating your resume with the respective experience you gain, especially if your work experience is minimal in your desired field. Complimenting your education, volunteerism and work experience with formal shadowing and internships presents you as a well-rounded candidate for programs or positions you’re pursuing. Engaging with your local Junior Achievement chapter is another great connection to make. You can evolve from mentee to mentor in a single semester. Best of luck as you work toward your goals!

Johanna recommends the following next steps:

  • Remember to connect with trusted advisors.
  • Investigate volunteer programs through local employers.
  • Connect with a Junior Achievement chapter near you.
  • Prepare your introduction and rehearse it.
  • Maintain an up to date resume.

Look into your school's pre-health program affiliates and check with your pre-health advisors. The university health center is also a possibility. Ask your friends and family if they could connect you with their own practitioners. Finally, it's never a bad idea to cold call a practice or a dentist that you would like to work with. Summer/PT/temp work is also a good option.

Ask your own dentist to shadow / volunteer there. And if there is a dental school near you ask them.

If your university has a dental school associated with it, I would ask pre-dental coordinator to set up shadowing opportunities. If not than the old fashion way of contacting local offices. Most healthcare professions will be willing to take students for shadowing experiences as it is our job to promote future generations.
