Thank you comment icon Within the financial/investment industry there are three major categories of analysts and they work for: 1) Buy-side firms (investment houses that manage their own funds) 2) Sell-side firms 3) Investment Banks A financial analyst is an umbrella title that can span across multiple industries, and as someone, like I assume you are, interested in finance I would investigate the three categories I listed above to see what interests you the most. From there look at entry level positions and their requirements. Look into companies you are familiar with and try to network your way in to learn more about possible roles/salaries/exit ops to find the right fit for you. Hope that helps! Chris Koester

FINANCIAL ANALYST DESCRIPTION
Financial analysts keep their fingers on the pulse of the economy. Financial analysts should be self-starters willing to dig deep into research. You should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATION
A bachelor’s degree is generally the minimum requirement. While a bachelor’s in finance is recommended, fields such as mathematics, statistics, economics, and accounting are also suitable. Licenses and certifications are also available and sometimes required by employers.

Certification is usually recommended depending on the position. The Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), offered by the CFA Institute, is very popular. To obtain CFA certification, a financial analyst must hold a bachelor’s degree, have four years of relevant professional experience, and pass three different examinations. You can also obtain further certification in specialty fields. Doing so will also greatly improve their advancement prospects.
