What do I need to know to become an x-ray tech?

To become a ARRT certified x-ray technologist in the medical radiography field, you will need to attend college and earn an associates degree in radiography. Most colleges have two-year programs, though some offer a one-year program for those already in the healthcare field.

For others who may be looking to increase their earnings and expand their credentials in medical radiography some colleges offer a four year bachelors degree program.

What is an x-ray technologist?

X-ray technologists, aka radiographic or radiology techs, perform a variety of tasks. They will screen patients and prepare them physically and mentally for the x-ray. They will be responsible for properly entering data into computers, and for keeping their work areas clean and stocked.

The most frequent procedure a tech will perform in a clinical setting is x-raying a patient's bones, lungs, and/or abdomen. Most work will be done alone, but some work will be done to assist a doctor during surgery or a in a diagnostic room.

An x-ray techn also performs mobile x-rays, diagnostic barium enemas, assists during procedures such as barium swallows, and operates imaging equipment during surgical procedures.

X-ray techs do NOT read the x-rays and tell the patients. That is up to a doctor with many years of training to do. Patients will ask what you see in their x-ray, but you must not tell them even if you know!

To all those out there interested in becoming an X-Ray tech, don't lose heart. Alot of fields out there right now are tight on the hire, unless you want to work at a fast food restaurant all your life, or you already have several degrees. If radiology is really the field you want to get into, then go for it. Perhaps the hiring market will be better once you graduate, alot of clinical sites hire people straight out after clinicals are over. There's also the option of getting involved with an agency. You make more money with them anyway, you just bounce around to whatever hospital needs you. I'd also suggest getting about a years worth of experience if you can, then applying to work for an Allied Health travel agency. They can set you up with some pretty great travel assignments that may actually turn into a permanent job if you are interested. I mean, lets face it, certain parts of the country just have better pay and job opportunities.

Radiologic technologists perform medical imaging exams and administer radiation therapy treatments. With the help of various imaging technologies, these professionals take pictures of a patient’s body for radiologists, who will then interpret the images. Radiologic technologists often specialize in a particular examination technique, such as mammography or bone densitometry. These professionals can also assist oncology teams in delivering radiation therapy to cancer patients. Most radiologic technologists are employed at state, local and private hospitals, physicians’ offices and in medical and diagnostic laboratories.

It’s a great field to get into. Yes you are exposed to radiation but you wear a badge that reads how much you have been exposed to and the facility you work for is required to have safety measures in place to keep that level very low. Rad techs wear protective lead aprons if they need to. You really are mostly out of the way of the radiation, I’ve been exposed more as a respiratory therapist then my husband the ct/rad tech has. (Although he is around it much more then me) Any job in health care comes with a whole lot of safety concerns. You will be around bodily fluids and needles. I’ve been stuck with a needle before thankfully a sterile one. My husband was stuck with a dirty one and had to be treated. You just learn with continuing education how to be safe in the work environment. I do have to say this field is very under appreciated for it’s safety concerns people think being a cop is dangerous well so is health care! Come to any ER on any given night. To work in this field, you need:
Interpersonal communication
Mathematics and science skills
Proficiency with medical software and patient database software
Ability to operate and maintain imaging equipment
Stamina and strength to stand on your feet for long periods of time and to assist patients into moving into proper positioning

To become a certified X-Ray Technician you will have to complete Post-secondary program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or another accrediting agency approved by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Yes!! Since the number of radiology technicians in the country is expected to grow by about 21% in the next 10 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This amounts to over 40,000 new job openings. In today’s economy, this indicates you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a job once you’ve secured the proper degree and certifications. Remember that those who have experience with more than one type of diagnostic imaging technology will have more job opportunities to choose from than those who are only certified in one area.

I think any career you are passionate about is a great choice. The medical field is booming, so yes, excellent choice.
