Is the effort you put into your work worth it at the end of the day? Why?

I'm asking because Ive always wondered if the workers behind the digital computer screen enjoy their job for a specific purpose. #computer-engineering

It's worth it if the work you do behind that screen has meaning to you. I create healthcare technology products to improve the experiences of doctors and patients, and that specific contribution to the common good makes the work worth it, whether it's done in front of a screen, on the road doing research or collaborating with a team.

It depends on the day, of course. And that's not *just* a joke: It's very important to remember that even the most satisfying jobs will have moments of frustration, periods of burnout, and so on. You have to be able to ride those or you'll miss out on a lot of wonderful jobs.

At the end of the...well, year, or decade, my job (in software engineering) is very satisfying to me. Being able to work on projects you feel invested in, having challenging problems to solve, and so on are all very important. I find that having an employer that expresses appreciation--both in "soft" ways like compliments and honors *and* in "hard" ways like making your pay commensurate with the value you've delivered, is really important too. And great people to work with is a huge plus, although you should again realize that it's never a situation that's going to be *perfect*--in any mid-size to large company there are of course going to be people you don't work at your best with.

Hi Melissa M. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

As I respond to this question in the year 2020, I think of all the wonderful startups that have been created since 2016 that utilize technology as a large driver in their success. Small businesses (with big causes), can reach large groups of people through which they can and have encouraged collaboration and giving.

I will also key in on a terrific word you used in your question..."purpose". Having purpose in what one does makes a huge difference. It means the difference between "trying it one more time" when something doesn't work as expected or desired...and giving up. Sometimes it is necessary to re-think on how to get something done and a sense of purpose can serve as strong booster to the effort that is put in to working it out.

Hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck to you!
