What is the most interesting part of your job as a librarian? The most stressful?

i've gotten to see it from the outside, but i would really like to have time to sit down with a librarian and see how their day is like. Every job has pros and cons. What's YOUR pro and YOUR con to your job? #librarian

David’s Answer

Hi, Carol! I am retired now, after having worked for over 30 years as a professional librarian. I've worked in public, academic and corporate/special libraries (architectural/engineering design and an accounting library). The most stressful and/or disagreeable was the public library. Public libraries are often underfunded and don't value librarians with professional degrees. In public libraries, librarians are often seen, by the public, as "mere civil servants" who can be treated with disdain and disrespect. Also, some public libraries expect the professional librarians to function as security guards, who have to deal with situations that should be handled by trained security staff. Add to this the fact that librarians are often faced with people who see the library as a playground, where they can do many very unsavory things (exhibitionism, voyeurism, up-skirting, and other sexual-related activities). These incidents wore on me a great deal, and I promised myself that I would never work in a public library again. I know of other professional librarians who have had the same experience. On the other hand, I greatly enjoyed working in the special/technical/corporate libraries, where I felt appreciated and where there was none of the unsavory aspects of a public library. Sorry to be so candid, but prospective librarians should be aware of these issues. If these types of things didn't exist, public libraries would be a very interesting and rewarding place to work.

David recommends the following next steps:

If at all possible, try to aim for being a librarian in a special library, rather than a public library.
