Sarah’s Answer

If you're interested in being a vet, one thing that really helped me hone my interest was taking courses online (i.e. EDX/Coursera) to learn a little more about the subject matter behind different jobs. I also got some neat certifications that I could post on LinkedIn and use on my resume for interviews!

Also looking for internships is a great help - that is really what propelled me into my career. Interning was also a great way to begin networking and helped me hear from a lot of different professionals.

More along the lines of networking, using LinkedIn to network and message people to hear about their experiences will help you make a path to your career. People love to talk about what they do as well as help others succeed. They'll help you determine how to succeed in your preferred field, what you need to study, how to present yourself, and whether or not you would be interested in the roles overall.

Best of Luck!

Jordan’s Answer

Hi Jordan. Finding the best job for yourself depends on what your interests are. You mentioned that you want to go to college and become a vet. I would suggest trying to find a part time job at a vet clinic to see if that is truly what you want to do. That will also give you some "real world" experience which can be very helpful because sometimes people think they want to get into one career field and then after having some experience, decide it is not for them. I would also suggest volunteering at a local shelter or SPCA or even doing some dog walking/pet sitting if you are very interested in working with animals.
Thank you comment icon This was going to be my suggestion as well. You don’t know what you’ll like until you try it so try to find a part time job, internship, or even just shadow someone in the field you’re interested in. Kat Jensen Engelbrecht, MBA

Bryce’s Answer

Hi Jordan,

Finding a job and career that you want to do for the rest of your life can seem very challenging at times, but I promise you will find what you are looking for. One of the best ways to figure out if a job is right for you is to shadow or get experience in the field itself before you commit. This allows you to get first hand experience and see what a day in the life of your desired career or job is like. So, if you want to be a vet shadow a vet for the day or get a job working at a vet office as a front desk person. Another way to really figure out what you want as a career is to think about outside factors going on in your life. Do you want to be grounded in one area? Do you want to travel? Is there a specific location you want to be? Will you have to move for the job/career? All these factors and more will play a role in deciding which career is right for you. I hope this helped you out a little bit.

Amanda’s Answer

I agree with the other answers that gaining experience early in a related job will help you decide if you really want to do that as a career and helps before you decide on a college. It also helps build a network of individuals who may continue to be mentors even if you don't choose that as a career. General job experience will help you learn what you like about work, benefits you want to seek out up front, like being a teacher so you can have your summers off, or the employee culture that will be the best fit. There can be a big difference from one company to the next even if you are doing the same job. Understanding a company's vision and mission statements can be very insightful and worth asking about in an interview.
