Robert’s Answer

A Pharm D degree is the first step in pursuing a career in health care, focusing on pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical care. The answer is yes, you can work for the government with the VA or perhaps the CDC or NIH. Your career path will only be limited by your imagination and your interests.

J'Shaun’s Answer

There are great opportunities to practice pharmacy in the government sector. I would look at the VA Hospital, Center for Disease Control, or NIH, as previously mentioned. I would also look at the Center for Medicare or Medicaid Services (CMS). Several Insurance companies, like United Healthcare and Blue Cross, are backed by their recommendations. So you could also look into Managed Care Pharmacy. Another thing that may also interest you is becoming an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. They have very extensive training, and may even take care of your student loans; which is a huge plus. The last thing I would consider is getting a dual degree. Some pharmacy programs are starting to offer PharmD/MPH programs. A Masters in Public Health is also a professional degree in which you can practice. MPH programs usually have 5 branches of specialization, but you may want to focus on Health Services Administration branch. People that practice this field are the Policy People. Good luck to you, and hope you can get some guidance from my recommendations.
