The most important thing to have when applying for design jobs is a really great portfolio. Credentials (like where you went to school) don't matter as much as your talent. The best way to showcase your talent to potential employers is to have a website or blog with your work on it. And don't just put up the final product: make sure you outline the design challenge, what you were trying to achieve, your design process, and anyone you worked with (and what each of you did).
Good luck!

It is not absolutely necessary, no. You could do certificate programs or get an occupational Associate's degree, as I did. It does depend on the type of job you want. 9-5 for large corporations: if this is what you want, or even to work for a large design agency, you will need to get the Bachelor's degree. Otherwise, you will be able to work for other types of companies, freelance, or start your own design service. I hope this helps!
