Hi Emily,
It is difficult when first starting a career as a surgeon to spend time with family. They spend many hours in the hospital or on call. It gets better once you get into the profession and you get more superiority. However, if you really want to be a surgeon I am sure your family will understand if you are unable to spend a lot of time at home.
I am sorry this is probably not what you were hoping to hear. Being a surgeon is a very important job, and therefore need to be there for their patients.
