Hi Kateri. Great question. Licensing requirements vary by state, but aspiring cosmetologists need the following: a high school diploma or GED, a cosmetology training certificate or associate degree in cosmetology and supervised hands-on experience to be eligible to take their state's cosmetology licensing exam. On average, about 1,500 hours of both cosmetology courses and supervised experience is needed in order to take the licensing test. For example, in California you need to have 1,600 hours of training to qualify to take the exam.

The courses you take will depend upon your career goals, as well as the program in which you enroll. Most basic cosmetology programs will cover a wide range of courses, including hair styling, nail care, makeup application, and more. The program curriculum is built to prepare you to pass the state exam, as well as prepare you for a career as a cosmetologist. You can also choose to take advanced training in a specialization, such as esthetics, hair removal, makeup application, nail technology, or hair care.

Good luck!
