I want to be a doctor and I want to go to other countries to help people. How do I do that?

I'm Ms. Hill at the International Community School. My 4th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Rachelle’s Answer

Hi. My name is Rachelle. There is an organization called Doctors Without Borders. People in the medical field work with this organization and help people around the world who are in need of medical care. First, you will need to go to undergraduate school for 4 years and then medical school for at least 4 years. Once you are in medical school, you will get hands on experience on how to become a doctor. After medical school you will also have at least 1 year where you will work as a resident. That means you work with a hospital in a specialized field like pediatrics (helping kids) or oncology (helping people who have cancer). The possibilities are endless for you. Good luck!!

John’s Answer

There are plenty of opportunities on the path to becoming a doctor to volunteer time in other countries. In medical school, there are several medical student organizations at a national level that support overseas volunteer experiences. Many doctors who are practicing medicine also volunteer their time in many different organizations, one of which is Doctors Without Borders.

During your third and fourth year of medical school, you are working shoulder to shoulder with these doctors. Many medical students ask if they can also go on the overseas missions to help.

In college before applying to medical school, some people choose to volunteer in a hospital. You will find that even in college there are many opportunities in other countries to help people. That help does not need to be providing medical care, but could be building houses.
