Hi Ethan! That's amazing you want to start your own business and it shows you are very forward thinking.

It really depends - people have found success with or without college. Personally, I think college is a great way to expand your view of the world as it gives you the opportunity to gain insight from a diverse group of people you likely would normally not interact with. There are entrepreneurial majors that would allow you to form connections with people who have similar goals, which would be invaluable for your future in entrepreneurship. Depending on what your business idea is, it would be a good idea to start as soon as possible to help you make your decision when the time comes.

Meeting with a business mentor (if you haven't already) would be really helpful for you. I see you're in GA - Atlanta SCORE is a free business mentor program which I have used before - there are volunteers to help you in many different aspects of business. https://atlanta.score.org/

Wishing you the best!

I love that you want to start your own business! It may be possible to do both- you can work on your business while taking classes. If your business takes off, that’s great! If unfortunately it doesn’t do well, then you are already working on a great back up plan.

Hi Ethan! I think it depends; for example my friend's brother started some business initiatives in college. I think with a clear goal and some connections it could work but it is also important to see if a degree can further your work as well! There are also business classes in high school sometimes, maybe you can take them and get more information. Lastly I would be careful when investing and make sure to talk with someone you trust and has experience in the area you are thinking about!

Best of luck!

If you have an idea you are passionate about, it is never to early to pursue it! I know plenty of people who started small businesses in high school and continued to develop them with the skills that they gained in college.

I don't see any reason why you can't start it now. Do your research on how to start it, what you need to do to secure a name, finances etc.. but go for it!!

Simeon’s Answer

If you go with starting a business, I would recommend using a franchise to get experience and mentoring from a proven business model. It's much harder to go it on your own. You'll learn the essential skills of budgeting, hiring, managing inventory, and customer service. These will allow you to strike out on your own with much more success in the future and perhaps with some more money and connections to help you get started. A business degree will offer some knowledge, but you can easily earn that knowledge on your own. A degree is mostly for the purpose of getting a company to hire you that would not otherwise hire you. If you can get experience running a business, your experience will trump other people's degrees right away and you won't have to pick up the debt they would have to. That being said, some schools offer great opportunities such as business plan competitions. In a business plan competition, you compete with other students to show your business idea and sometimes the winners are awarded a business loan to launch their idea.
