Chantell’s Answer

It really all depends on what your goals and abilities are as an individual. Do you want to do something that you feel passionate about, travel, or something that makes a lot of money? In a perfect world all three of these sound amazing, but sadly that’s not always the case when it comes to finding a job out in the real world.

If you want to attend college do some research on possible programs your school has to offer, and what types of careers you can get from these programs. Always utilize your advisor! That’s what they’re there for, ask them what types of jobs you can get in their field or other fields. Most of the time they’re always happy to help. This process may take awhile, I didn’t know what I wanted to study in school until my junior year of college.

If you decided you do not want to attend college, there are tons of other options as well! Such as trade schools, military, or just working your way up in some companies.

In short there’s no one job that is deemed the “best” for after school. It really all depends on what you want as a person, and what you can see your self doing.

Hi Zelin,

If you are having challenges in deciding on a potential job after High School, maybe your school guidance counselor can have you take a Career Aptitude Test.

This is a test that will tell you some potential jobs based on your responses. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions that are asked, it’s just a test to give you some insight on possible careers.

Good luck!

If you can, I'd recommend trying to work at a summer camp where you can pick up lifeguarding and ropes course training. You can then use your lifeguarding certification long after the fact and earn a better wage right off the bat. Plus, lifeguarding is pretty easy to include in a college semester schedule.

Consider getting some additional training or education. There just aren't many jobs that only require a high school education which will pay enough for you to live independently (e.g. having your own apartment, car, etc.).

If you've already decided that a 4-year college degree isn't for you, there are still plenty of other options:

* You can enroll in local community college for a certificate or 2-year AA/AS degree.
* You can get vocational training at a trade school.
* Some industries offer apprenticeships and training for vocational careers.

Talk to your school counselor about other ideas, and if there's a industry or profession that interests you then seek our someone in that field for their advice.

Good luck!
