Aloha, Kaiyi!

The majority of my career has been in the hospitality industry, although I have worked in retail as well. As it pertains to hospitality, at minimum, I work no less than ten hours a day, five days a week (50 hour work weeks). Because the hospitality industry works while others "play", I also work nights, weekends, and holidays. This is definitely not an industry with a Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, weekends & holidays off lifestyle. But that being said, I thoroughly enjoy what I do. I get to work in environments where others vacation or spend their leisure time, so it's a fun and rewarding environment to be a part of! We're also often a part of individuals milestones and cherished memories shared with family & friends - whether that's birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations, engagements, weddings, you name it!

I applaud the fact that you're asking this question now, because I do believe it's an important one as you begin your career or job search. Work/life balance is an important & individual thing for most of us. You are being responsible in understanding what it is you're getting yourself into before you jump in and accept the job. The company which I have worked for, for nearly 19 years, was very open & transparent throughout the application process of the kind of hours I'd be working in pursuing a career here.

John’s Answer

I am a pediatric hospitalist. If a child comes to the emergency room and is sick enough that they need to stay in the hospital to be treated, doctors like myself are the people who take care of them. I only work in the hospital taking care of sick kids, where a general pediatrician takes care of sick kids in their clinic, and focuses on keeping kids safe and healthy by preventing illness.

Typically I work 7 days straight 12 hours at a time. I then will have a few days off before I have to come back to work. There are times that I am also on-call, which means that after I leave the hospital if something happens, I will be called and come back to the hospital. That can happen at any hour of the day, so sometimes I have to come back to the hospital at 3 in the morning. These can be very long hours, but usually I find time in the day to get sleep and take care of myself. I never feel overly exhausted because I love what I do. When you love which you do it does not feel very much like work.

Cameron’s Answer

I am a clinical research assistant studying Parkinson's Disease! I typically work 40 hours a week--Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 am to 5 pm (with a 30 minute lunch break). When a subject comes in for a research visit, depending on the type of research we're doing, the days can vary from 7:45 am to 6 pm, 8 am to 2 pm, or 8:30 am to 12 pm. There is a good amount of flexibility with my job; I tend to stick to normal business hours, but some days may start much earlier or finish later.
