What classes should I take the rest of high school to get me ready to try to get my certification for being a personal trainer?

I've been playing with a few ideas. My father owns a gym and is a certified personal trainer, and I would always love to keep the business running because I saw how much work he put into it, but then again some other careers I've looked at is landscaping and outside work that pays well I would try to start my own business and I know the risks I run like not getting workers #career and supplies and jobs from the jump. So I kind of need an opinion on both of my ideas.

Hi Lucas!

You have a couple of great answers here from Catherine and Aaron! Hopefully you are planning to attend college and achieve your bachelor's.

In regards to your question about what to take in high school. Any subject you take is very important to function as a business owner. Math, Science, English, Accounting, Health and Physical Education are all important! In either capacity as a PT or lawn care, communication is important as you will have to work with and communicate with clients. Communication both verbal and written form. Getting certified to be a PT ... That's obvious! There is so much more to running a business! Advertising, marketing! I could go on and on!!

When you have you're own business, you need skills! Learning those skills starts today!

Hope this helps!

Coursework may be limited in this area at the high school level, so I would suggest that you do the following:
1) Speak to your high school guidance counselor or academic administrator to determine what curriculum/courses are offered in the area of Personal Training and take those courses.
2) Speak to your high school Physical Education Teacher concerning options personal training at your school and with outside organizations (Football Team, Basketball Team, Wrestling, etc).
3) Volunteer to support your high school athletic programs as a personal trainer during their practices.
4) Volunteer or get a job with an organization that is involved with physical development such as the YMCA, Fitness Clubs, Community Sports Teams, etc.
5) Speak to representatives at local colleges or even volunteer to support their sports programs.
6) Read material and study up on personal training as a career. Learn as much as you can.
7) Speak to a Personal Trainer or join online communities where you can speak to other people who are interested in Personal Training.

Hi Lucas, I would recommend taking biology as some level of understanding would be required so you could understand how your patients' bodies work and how best to treat them. Besides that, you could try being a PT assistance with your school's athletic department or at a local PT practice to gain experience. When it is time for college, a degree in kinesiology, sports medicine, etc. would be helpful.
