Jordan’s Answer

An animal science program will cover aspects of companion animal and food animal topics. This includes biology (biotechnology, anatomy/physiology, genetics, reproduction, nutrition), business operations (production and management), animal health/veterinary science, and meat science. As an animal scientist, it would be important to choose from one of these topics to specialize in and to then choose the type of work within those specialties. Each specialty may have jobs in conducting research, product development, sales, technical services, operations management, regulatory affairs, food safety, or inspection/auditing services.

Animal scientists can work for the government within the state-level or federal level department of agriculture, department of health, or food and drug administration. In industry, there are animal pharmaceutical manufacturers, livestock raising operations, meat manufacturers, animal food manufacturers, veterinary/animal health providers that rely on people with an understanding of animal science.

In order to narrow down and specialize, you should take some time to review job boards that can give you an idea of the volume of jobs, common geographies, job titles, and companies. The following websites can find the jobs that I mentioned above: USAjobs.gov , agcareers.com, and careersinfood.com. Of course, general job boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Monster can find similar jobs as well. Using the correct search terms will help and will be figured out as you narrow down your interests. Informational interviews, attending conferences and job fairs, participating in internships, and taking targeted courses or workshops will help you narrow down what to do.

Dr. James’s Answer

Animal scientists study a variety of domestic animal species and frequently work with livestock to understand the biological and chemical processes by which the animals grow. Animal scientists play a key role in maintaining and improving the quality and quantity of the country's food supply. They may also be more research-oriented, working in zoological fields or specific veterinary fields to help preserve the health and welfare of animals in the wild and in captivity. They may focus their interest on specific areas such as reproduction, nutrition, genetics (animal geneticists), or development.
