What skills do I need to be a stockbroker?

License wise, I believe you need to pass Series 7 and Series 63 at minimum. These tests are sponsored by your employer and your employer might ask you to take other tests.

A bachelor’s degree in finance, account, economics, or business. If you want to advance, a master’s in business administration would be appropriate.

As a stockbroker it will be your responsibility of a stockbroker is to get clients for the brokerage firm. Networking, cold calling, writing articles/blogs, running websites, etc. are some of the many tools a stockbroker must attract clients. As a stockbroker, you will need to master a wide domain of skills, such strong analytical skills, communication, attention to detail and the ability to review the numbers as it relates to changes in stock prices and the market and how it may or will impact decision you need to make.

As a stockbroker, you will be expected to analyze hundreds of stocks daily. As you will be working with numbers daily, it is important that you enjoy crunching numbers and have an aptitude for working with them. Having excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be important as you will be working with individuals daily and advising them on how they should invest their money.

This is a fast-moving career and anyone in this field needs to be able to make quick, accurate decisions.

Do your research, talk to those who work in the field. Find out why they chose this career path. Look for opportunities to work as an intern or shadow someone to get a better idea of what the position requires.
