Is knowing electronics an important part of mechanical engineering?

Hey all, I've been part of FIRST for 5 years now, 4 being in FRC, and I've been focusing more on the mechanical side of things rather than learning the electronic components. I do know the basics, but should I try to get a better understand over the course of this year?

Most answers to these type of questions are that it depends. I know some MEs who never use their knowledge of electronics and some that have electronics being a big focus on their job. For me, I have worked closely with the EEs for most of my career. Most of the time it is to help in packaging and managing thermal and the knowledge helps. Other times it is to challenge their assumptions. More knowledge is always useful. That can include more knowledge of electronics, or you can takes classes in other areas that can also be useful.

Thank you comment icon This is a great follow up question. When I hire young engineers, there are 2 things that I look for, good understanding of fundamentals and passion. This means that if I share with you a design questions, you know how to relate it to the course work and apply it. Passion is shown by the classes you take, the projects that you do, and how well you can share those details. So, take classes that build your excitement and share why you went down that path. Hiring managers look for engineers that are excited about doing the extra work to be the best they can be. The short answer is that you need to take courses that help build your passion. They may guide you on your career or just demonstrate dedication. Either way, it is all positive. Glenn A

Calvin’s Answer

It wasn't important for my career. I tended to be involved in mechanical only type equipment. I imagine it will become more important in the future as some of the equipment I worked on with mechanical governors now use electronic systems. A basic understanding is probably important, so as to understand the limitations for mechanical systems
