To become a homicide detective, there are two ways:
1. You can clear exams such as UPSC or state public service commission and choose the police service option, or
2. Get a postgraduate degree in Criminology from recognized institutes and start a private detective career.

My suggestion would be, to prepare for UPSC or state public service commission exams to get into a fruitful career.

A few things to consider - most Detectives start as Police Officers. Therefore, you normally would need to start by going to a Police Academy (these can either be sponsored by an agency or you can self-sponsor). To get into the academy you need to turn 21 before you start as an Officer and you need a clean background check (no criminal activity). Upon completing the Police Academy, you will either get hired or enter the Field Training program for the agency that sponsored you. The agency size will determine how long you will need to work Patrol and/or other assignments before applying for a Detective position. Most agencies have a requirement as to the amount of time you have been on the job before you are eligible for Detective positions.
