Hi Gabriela,

There are many ways to network for business. When I was in college one of my professors made it a requirement to attend a professional event and get two business cards. While it can be intimidating being a student attending a professional event, don't be nervous. Many of the professionals there will be impressed that you are taking initiative to network and you may even find a mentor at the event.

As for what kind of networking events, that depends on what you are interested in. Most professions have an at least one association that will host various events throughout the year. Some of these events are a large annual conferences and others are much smaller monthly "Lunch and Learns." Pick a topic that you are passionate about to do a Google search for associations related to that to see what they offer. It doesn't even have to be a traditional "professional" organization. I used to be very interested in the sport of Triathlon and attended a traithlon conference. I was able to network with many business people in that industry who were there representing their companies.

When you have identified the event you want to attend, be sure to go prepared. Dress appropriately (this will vary by event and industry, but business casual is a safe bet most of the time.). Practice your introduction and why you are interested in the industry/event. When you arrive don't be afraid to find one or two people to walk up to and strike up a conversation. Try to avoid groups of 5 or more as that can be difficult to participate in the discussion.

Lastly, if you find an organization or industry you are interested in, volunteer to work at the event. It will keep you engaged and attendees will begin to recognized you to more events you work/attend.

Stephen recommends the following next steps:

Google search for a professional organization of a topic you are interested in. See if there is a local chapter and what events that chapter has. Reach out to that local chapter and ask if they will let you attend for free or if they have a student discount.
See if there is a MeetUp in your area focused on business or another topic you are interested in https://www.meetup.com/

Debbie’s Answer

Hi! Great question, networking is such a great way to learn more about a career by talking to those that are currently in it. Check with your school's career center...they may have a career fair where you can meet many different professionals across a variety of companies/industries, or specific companies may go to college campuses and do presentations and host networking events as well. The career center should be a good resource for all these types of events. Good luck!

Hello Gabriela,

I love Stephen's advice. I believe if you follow those steps you will be very successful. I also want to add if you are interested in Webinar - I would advise doing your own webinars via Social Media. Do Facebook Live about the events that interest you. It does not have to be long or even in detail. For example, "Hi, this is Gabriela. I am really interested in Film." Allow the conversation to be brief but flow naturally.

You will be surprised by the community of responses you will receive and the invites to come to their events. You can build a community and also network online. Opportunities can come from anywhere.

Do a 2 minute Facebook Live about your interest
