Susan’s Answer

Hi, Michaela,

I would echo what Rachel said about there being many different types of writers, so the people you would work with are dependent on the type of writing you are doing. In addition to what she mentioned about writing publications (books, etc.) or for companies like magazines, newspapers, and other publications, there are grant writers, policy and procedure writers (many large companies need these), communication or marketing specialists, freelance writers, and various others. In each of these, you would be working with others in some capacity. As a grant writer, for example, you would work with the organization on whose behalf you are writing the grant. I am currently a policy and procedure writer for a health insurance company, and I work with the subject matter experts, directors, compliance experts, and others who advise me what information needs to be included in a policy. As Rachel said, most writers work with at least one other person at some point in their process.

I hope this helps! Good luck to you!

Rachel’s Answer

Hi Michaela,

There are a lot of jobs that have to do with writing, and so it would be good to narrow down what kind of writing you want to do, because that might determine how many people you work with.
There are some self publishers that post their work to be critiqued online without having anyone look at it first, but most writers have at least one editor, who will consider their work and help them to shape and solidify what is they want to say. If you want to publish a book, you will likely have several editors, and eventually will want to get in with a publisher who will help you work with distributors. If you work at a magazine or publication, you will have editors who check your periods and commas, as well as content editors who check to make sure everything is in order in a bigger way.
Though many writers work from anywhere they are, there is usually at least a few people who work with you. If you want to write, but are struggling, you can find a co-writer, but this leads to whole list of challenges.
