The classes to become a midwife will partly depending on which midwifery path you take. There are three types of midwives: certified nurse midwives, midwives, and lay midwives. I have included two websites to help you look at the different titles.
If you become a certified nurse midwife, you would attend nursing school first and then continue to study midwifery.

The classes in nursing and midwifery school can include: anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, process of birth, newborn care (including neonatal resuscitation), women’s health, community/population health, psychology, history of midwifery, and more. You can find the details of what nurse midwives need to know by clicking the website below for “Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice” And, I included websites for lists of nursing schools.

As I reflect to my high school classes, I believe the most beneficial courses in preparing a foundation for nursing and midwifery school were:
*Biology
*AP Biology
*Chemistry
*Psychology
*Sociology
*Broadcast Journalism (public speaking skills)
*English (you will write more than you think in nursing and midwifery programs, and as a nurse)

The non-academic activities in school that were helpful:
*Volunteering to help children locally and internationally with clothes drives, Toys-for-Tots, and fund raising to bring a child to the US for medical surgery. The experiences provide an opportunity to learn about the support others need in life and how to help.
*Team sports: in healthcare you work with a team to provide safe and high-quality care. As a result, learning how to work in a team is a skill to develop over time.

Mentor:
*Find a mentor who will support you in your goals.

When I was interested in becoming a midwife in middle school, I was informed there were “no such things as midwives anymore” Low and behold the answer was incorrect. Seek those who can support you in your dreams.
A recent story I read in the news is of an 89-year-old man who completed his PhD in Physics. All along he wanted to complete his study in Physics but was steered to other careers by others (see link below). Keep asking questions and seeking what is in your heart.
