Keith’s Answer

I recommend living in on-campus housing at least for your first year. Living on-campus will help you connect with other students better, and also is a nice transition to ultimately living off-campus with roommates, or by yourself.

I personally lived on-campus for two years, and off-campus for two years with roommates. In graduate school I was a commuter, so I would take the train to classes or the library or lab during the day, and back to my apartment at night. By that point I was living with my girlfriend, now wife, who was also in graduate school. I tried to structure it like a job, where I would go 5 days a week for a whole day, not just when I had classes. That forces you to keep up with your work every day, and is something I recommend.

Amy’s Answer

Whilst It would be cheaper to live at home with parents it is a much better student experience to live in student accomodation or on your own.
I would say that within your first year at college student accomondation would be the best, it'll be a good chance to meet other people and gain some independence.
As for living by yourself I would possibly leave that till later on in college when the workload gets more serious and heavier.
Both living alone and living away from home are very good experiences.

I agree with the information provided in the previous answer. However, I think the experience of living on your own and making your own decisions is key to your growing into an independent person.

Hi!

The answer really depends upon your situation. Here is my ranking: (1) parents (2) campus housing

Living at your parents, you only have to live with the differences between college and high school without having to deal with the other distractions:

Living on campus is good, but you have distractions of living with different people, but your housing is on campus is safer with the campus security and is near your your classes and you only have to pay for it when you use it and you can always call the school representative (residence adviser) if you have a problem and the school will take care of it.

When you are living off campus, you have to pay year round on a lease basis regardless of whether you are there or not. If you do not go to summer school, for example, you still have to pay the rent or sublet to someone else who will pay the rent when you are not there, which could be a problem - reliable people are hard to find. Also, if you have a problem, you will have to deal with it yourself. Also, you are not as safe as you would be in campus housing, as you are outside of the boundaries of campus safety officers.

Where you live is your decision, but you have to know the factors to see which would be most comfortable for you.

Let me know if and how this might be of help. Keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress.

Simeon’s Answer

My favorite version of the college living situation is splitting a rental house several different ways between friends. I was able to do this after college and got rent down to about $275/month for a spell. Those were the good times, lol. As far as cheapness goes, you will obviously save the most money staying at home, but if you can live near campus, it's well worth the experience.
