Elizabeth’s Answer

It really depends a lot on what type of writer you want to be. Do you want to write novels? Do you want to write marketing campaigns for a company? Do you want to write technical guides for others to use for a process? Not sure yet? The key to many of these writing fields, however, is one going to be one thing. A stellar portfolio. You have that, and you'll be fighting off job offers.

Why a portfolio? A lot of employers in the writing field are looking for people with experience, so the more experience you can have on your resume, the better! From experience, I can tell you that the first thing a potential employer is going to ask you for is your resume and a link to your portfolio. They want to see what your writing style is like and if you will be a good fit for whatever their company/website/product voice is. So whether you find an establishment to publish your work, or if you publish your own content through a blog or website, you'll put yourself on the map! Especially if you have experience creating content using a particular platform (Wordpress, etc.), this will make you extremely marketable.

And don't be afraid to freelance! The best way to get experience, and to build up your portfolio, is to freelance. It not only helps you put things on your resume and portfolio but if you're not sure what type of writing you want to specialize in, it can even help you figure out exactly what niche you fit into. Don't overload yourself (trust me), if you have some free time, it's always worth a try. Just have fun with it!

Absolutely! The more you can get your writing and work out for others to read and give you feedback on, the better your writing will get. You can write a blog, or you can use a site that is designed for writing, such as FanFiction or FictionPress.
