What are the requirements for becoming a CPA in Kansas?

How many credits do you have to have? Do you have to work a certain amount of time before taking the exam?

To sit for the exam, you must have completed:

A bachelor’s degree
150 hours total, including specific coursework requirements

Required coursework includes:
Business & General Education – 42 hours
Must include:

Macro & Microeconomics + 1 upper‑division econ course
At least 2 business law courses
College algebra or higher math
Statistics / quantitative analysis
Finance, management, marketing
Written & oral communication (11 hours)

Accounting – 30 hours
Must include:

Financial accounting
Managerial accounting (beyond intro)
Auditing (AICPA or PCAOB standards)
Taxation
Accounting information systems (beyond intro)

Data Analytics (New Requirement)
As of January 1, 2024, Kansas requires:

A data analytics course at the 200‑level or higher

No — Kansas does NOT require work experience to sit for the exam.
You only need the education requirements above.

Work experience IS required to get your license (after you pass all exam sections):
Kansas requires:

1 year of full‑time experience, supervised by a licensed CPA
This can be in public accounting, government, industry, or academia

Kansas is a two‑tier state:

You pass the exam → you get a CPA certificate
You complete the 1 year of experience → you get your CPA license

Yes — Kansas allows:

You may sit for the CPA Exam up to 60 days before completing the 150‑hour requirement, as long as final transcripts are submitted within 120 days.

Hi there! All of the requirements can be found on your state board’s website: https://nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/kansas/.

Then if you scroll to the section that says “ Accountancy Licensing Library” and click on the link at the bottom of that section, it gives you a choice for student. You can follow all those prompts to understand what the requirements are.

Generally speaking, you need to have a certain amount of credits from your education, then on top of that work requirements and of course passing the exam. every state is different as to how many in each category they require.

You need 150 credit hours with 42 of those being in business and gen ed courses, 11 hours in communication, 30 hours in accounting theory and practice. You don't need to work a certain amount of time but you must be employed by a Kansas public accounting firm . In 2024, you will also need a course in data analytics for business or accounting. I believe you need a year of experience in accounting to qualify as a CPA, but you don't need a year of experience after passing all 4 parts of the exams.
