Sure, It's a good decision and what I want to add is the efforts needed to become prominent among the mathemathicians are huge for which extra hard work is requirement. It is a very good career indeed.

Study Finance and Mathematics or Finance and Statistics or Actuarial Science or Financial Risk Management.
Get registered with the Society of Actuaries to get practice license.
Start a consultancy job after gaining some years of industry experience in the role.

You can actually do both. If you are driven to teach, online teaching and tutor is a way to make some extra cash and also manage your own schedule.
