What do people do if they don't end up enjoying their career pathway/job?

If you end up not liking your choice of career, do you try to pursue a different one or is it too late?

Hi Joe,

That is a great question you got here.

I feel a person must give minimum of 6 months till 1 year to decide if the choice of career path fits him/her interest and lifestyle.

I strongly believe it is never too late for one to change their career path at any time.

Wish you the best for your future. Take care and stay safe.

You should never make big decisions in a hasty manner, but it is never too late to pursue another career if you find you do not enjoy what you're doing. I went to law school with several middle-aged people who already had established careers but were looking for a change. I keep up with some of them on LinkedIn and they seem to be satisfied with their decisions. I also went to lawschool with people who later found they didn't enjoy being lawyers. One went back to school to become an engineer instead.

The point is, life is too short to feel stuck in a career that no longer satisfies you. If you find you don't enjoy your career, you can always look for a new one. And sometimes just taking a different job in the same field is enough of a change to satisfy a desire to switch careers.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Joe, this is a great question and thank you for asking it. Many people spend their lives in career path that they don't like because of fear - fear of what others might think about them leaving what is considered a good career. However, each of us has a choice, choice to choose that if that career path I entered in 10 years ago is not making me feel as fulfilled as it once did, then you can choose to change career path.

I was in banking for over 13 years and after a while, it wasn't making me feel fulfilled and so I took a calculated risk and started Life Coaching and this career path is what I am on now...

Make it a habit of becoming a life-long learner. Learn different things, it will be one of your greatest assets when you think of changing your career path.

Remember the fear of change is what keep people stuck in a career path they don't enjoy anymore. Never allow fear of change to stop you from reaching your highest potential in whatever you choose to pursue. Keep learning and growing. Also remember that networking is the number one unwritten rule of success. So go out and build your network as you learn from these people as well.

All the best as you take on your journey to finding a career path that will bring you fulfillment.

Joe,

Your career path is just that. A path. It’s not you. It’s not your brand. It’s only your choice of work and study for as long as you choose it.

Now here is the catch…..

You can never stop learning and growing. Ever. Changing careers is totally doable. I went from having a graduate degree in archaeology to being an artificial intelligence specialist at one of the largest tech companies in the world. It took constant self education. Soaking up everything you can from an experience or job to create a series of skills.

The second piece is to take calculated risks and network as many people as you can get to know. When opportunities arise because you know people you have to take some and dive in. Learn on the job as you go. Admit your inefficiencies and be willing to put in effort to grow them to strengths.

Take these things and be your own Sherpa in your journey. Decide what is good for you and follow what inspires you to do it well. Those will be your best performing jobs.

Good luck my friend!!!
