There are many options for estimating. They all of their strengths and weaknesses. Some are fast to calculate, others take more time to enter the data.
One point estimating.
Analogous Estimating (Top-Down)
Parametric Estimating
Regression analysis.
Learning curve
Heuristics
Three-Point Estimating
Triangular Distribution (Simple Average)
Beta Distribution (Weighted Average)
Bottom Up Estimating
Affinity Estimating
T-Shirt Sizing (for a project, not a task).
Most of the time, for IT planning, we ask the IT resource for an estimate on a particular task. They generally have enough experience to give an accurate estimate on the task. Analogous Estimating (Top-Down).

Hi there! Let me share some helpful Scrum terms that I've used in my career for estimating how much effort a task might take:
1. Story Points
These are the most common units in Scrum. They measure effort by looking at:
- How complex the task is
- How much work is involved
- Any risks or uncertainties
Story points aren't the same as hours. They're usually based on the Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20…).
2. Planning Poker
This is a fun way for the team to estimate tasks together. Everyone picks a story-point value in secret, then reveals it to encourage discussion and agreement.
3. T-Shirt Sizing
This method is great for quick, big-picture estimates, like planning a roadmap. Sizes like XS, S, M, L, and XL show how complex or effortful a task is, not how long it will take.
